In the silicone hose industry, price comparisons are an everyday topic.
We often hear:
“They use the same material — Why are your prices so much higher?”
That’s a fair question — especially when you’re looking at a straight hose, 45° elbow, or reducer that looks almost identical.
But looks can be deceiving.
What appears to be “just a hose” is often where critical performance — and long-term cost — begins to diverge.
What You’re Really Buying: Not Just a Hose
Choosing a hose is not just about material. It’s about how it’s made, what it’s tested against, and how long it lasts under pressure, heat, and time.
Take this example:
A customer recently sent us a hose from another supplier for testing. Visually, it seemed okay.
But:
- Peel strength: Only 186 N/m — far below the SAE J20 requirement of 1400 N/m
- Reinforcement layer: Used single-strand polyester, not multi-filament — making it far weaker
In contrast, our hose tested at 1567 N/m, with consistent results across batches.

Fire Retardancy: Overlooked, But Critical
We ran a flame test on the competitor’s hose. After removing the flame source:
- ❌ Their fabric continued to burn
- ✅ Ours self-extinguished, due to flame-retardant yarn and correct silicone saturation
This isn’t just lab trivia. In real-world engine bays, fire behavior matters.
❌ “It passes water” — Isn’t Enough
One of the most common responses?
“It passed the water test.”
Sure. Once. Maybe twice. But that doesn’t prove:
- Heat aging resistance
- Burst reliability
- Adhesion under vibration or thermal cycling
A proper hose needs to work — not just on sample #1, but batch #1000.
Choosing the Right Hose: 5 Questions That Matter
Ask these when sourcing elbows, reducers, or custom shapes:
- What’s the centerline bend radius?
- What’s the tolerance range across batches?
- Are test reports available?
- Can the supplier prove material consistency?
✅ If these answers matter to you, you’re ready for a higher-performance hose.
Want Consistency? It Starts with a Systematic Manufacturer
Before diving into specs, drawings, or test sheets — ask a more basic question:
